This task is primarily designed to assess a subject’s sustained attention, working memory, and executive function. During the calculation process, the subject must maintain continuous focus on the task, remember the result of the previous step, and use it as the basis for the next operation. Simultaneously, they must inhibit interference from irrelevant information to accurately perform the sequence of calculations. While individuals with normal cognitive function can typically complete this task successfully, those with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or cognitive decline may exhibit errors in calculation, skipped steps, an inability to complete the task, or lapses in attention. Therefore, the “serial subtraction of 7 from 100” task reflects not only mathematical ability but also effectively measures an individual’s capacity for sustained attention and cognitive control, serving as a key indicator of cognitive status within the MoCA scale.
