A Senior Activity Full of Cultural Warmth
On January 16, 2024, before the Spring Festival, Lelingkaixinwu · MMZK joined hands with Yinxing Memory Home to organize a traditional Chinese cultural-themed activity — “Encountering Tang and Song Dynasties · A Journey to Chang’an” for seniors.
A meaningful senior activity should not only be lively and entertaining but also encourage older adults to participate willingly and enjoy the experience. This event combined traditional cultural elements, interactive games, and social engagement, allowing seniors to experience the warmth of the festival while naturally participating in activities in a relaxed and joyful atmosphere.
Integrating Cognitive Training into Fun Activities
Instead of presenting activities as formal “training,” the event creatively integrated cognitive skills such as attention, memory, decision-making, hand-eye coordination, and communication into traditional cultural games and interactive challenges.
Holding their activity cards, seniors participated in a series of wooden cognitive games, including “One Shot Victory,” “Releasing Cao Cao,” “Ants Moving House,” “Sesame Blossoms,” “Fishing for the Moon,” and “Dragon’s Tail.”
After completing each challenge, participants received “ancient coins” as rewards. The joyful atmosphere reminded many seniors of visiting traditional temple fairs in their childhood, bringing back warm memories and a sense of achievement.
Although these games appeared simple and entertaining, they provided valuable cognitive stimulation:
- Huarong Road trains observation skills, spatial planning, and logical thinking;
- Tower of Hanoi improves sequential reasoning and problem-solving abilities;
- Stacking Games enhance concentration, fine motor control, and stability;
- Skill Ball develops hand-eye coordination, reaction ability, and balance.
From “Training” to “Joyful Companionship”
This traditional cultural garden event was not only a celebration but also an exploration of applying cognitive games in real-life senior care scenarios.
The activity design focused on safety, enjoyment, and emotional support. Every successful challenge was followed by encouragement and positive feedback, helping seniors gain confidence, happiness, and a sense of accomplishment through participation.
By combining wooden cognitive games, traditional culture, and social interaction, cognitive activities became more than simple exercises—they became a natural and enjoyable part of seniors’ daily lives.
