Although jigsaw puzzles may appear simple, within the fields of neuroscience and cognitive rehabilitation, they are regarded as a form of “whole-brain” exercise. When older adults or individuals with cognitive impairments engage in puzzling, multiple regions of the brain are simultaneously activated and work in concert. Through tasks involving piece rotation, pattern matching, and spatial navigation, this activity stimulates visuospatial processing abilities; it exercises executive functions and logical planning skills, while also enhancing mental concentration and visual search capabilities—thereby training both attention and short-term memory.
